Sprint launches it’s LTE network in 15 cities today

Sprint has today launched it’s next generation LTE cellular network today in 15 cities around America, finally bringing Sprint up to par with at&t and Verizon. Sprint had previously used WiMAX as the basis of it’s 4G network, which offered vastly inferior data speeds when compared to LTE.

The following cities get to play with Sprint’s new network today, given that they have an LTE compatible phone (such as the Galaxy Nexus, or the HTC EVO 4G LTE):

  • Atlanta
  • Athens, GA
  • Calhoun, GA
  • Carrollton, GA
  • Newnan, GA
  • Rome, GA
  • Dallas
  • Forth Worth, TX
  • Granbury-Hood County, Texas
  • Houston
  • Huntsville, TX
  • San Antonio, TX
  • Waco, TX
  • Kansas City
  • St. Joseph, Mo.

Early reports are promising with users reporting download speeds very similar to at&t and Verizon’s 4G network. Unfortunately, users will need to purchase entirely new phones to be able to take advantage of Sprint’s new LTE network, with existing WiMAX phones being incompatible with the new network.

Now you have to wonder how quickly they’ll deploy to other markets. They’ve got some catching up to do with Verizon.
