As social media sites such as Twitter get more involved in the day to day life of America, more and more times are we hearing about the judicial system requesting access to sensitive information gathered by these social media sites in order to help solve a crime or the like. Today, we’ve got another story – an Anonymous Twitter account has begun posting potentially threatening tweets claiming that things like “Planning a murder is more difficult than I thought.” and referring to last month’s Aurora shooting.
The NYPD had then promptly taken notice of the malicious tweets, and requested that Twitter release sensitive information to them without a warrant. Twitter then responded with the following:
We appreciate the timeliness and sensitivity of this matter, and have reviewed the reported Twitter account. While we do invoke emergency-disclosure procedures when it appears that a threat is present, specific and immediate, this does not appear to fall under those strict parameters as per our policies.
