Sony PlayStation Vita lagging behind expectations, to go through marketing overhaul

Let’s face it: Sony’s never done particularly well in the handheld gaming space, with the original PSP platform remaining more or less a “me too” alternative to the vastly more popular Nintendo DS platform, but when word gets out that the PlayStation Vita has sold less in the same timeframe than the Nintendo 3DS did, you know you’re in trouble.

Alas, this is exactly the situation Sony is in – the company has just confirmed that their newest handheld console, the PlayStation Vita, has sold a mere 2.2 million in under a year. Sony is reportedly blaming the poor sales on the company’s marketing for the platform, which has been thus far focusing on young adults (although I’d argue a fair bit of the problem is with the amount of marketing – I had forgotten this even existed).

Sony will be reportedly redirecting advertising to target a younger advertising – though good luck getting your parents to spend $250 on what they’ll consider just another “gameboy”, kids.
