Windows 8 Pro to be priced at $199 come next February

When Microsoft announced that Windows 8 Pro would cost a mere $49.99 when purchased digitally, the world was on fire – for the first time, a major operating system release from the folks at Microsoft was affordable to the masses. That bubble popped a little when Microsoft announced that the price was just a temporary special promotion, which tempered our excitement if not just a little bit, but this is sure to pop our bubble entirely – The Verge is now reporting that when the promotion is over come January 31st, Windows 8 Pro will be priced at a pricy $199.

Microsoft has yet to announce pricing for any version of their basic Windows 8 “Core” edition, though we’d expect it to be drastically cheaper than the Windows 8 Pro options. Windows 8 is set for release to the general public on October 26th and is now available for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
