Intel has no love for Linux with new Atom processors
Fans of open source operating systems beware: Intel loves you not. That’s essentially the takeaway from reports saying that Intel has claimed that they’re not supporting Linux on Clover Trail PCs, saying that Linux simply “cannot handle” the new processors.
Essentially, the issue here seems to stem from the fact that the new Clover Trail Atom processor has a redesigned power management system, which is totally incompatible with Linux at the moment. When pressed, Intel said that they’ll hope Linux users simply choose to switch to Windows 8, which works just fine on the new architecture.
So the ball’s now in Linux’s court – will the community make the changes to the Linux kernel required for it to play nice with the new processors, or will they lag behind until it’s too late?
