Square now processes $8 billion annually, closes $200 million Series D financing round

Square, the mobile credit card payment service that works with a large variety of devices, including iOS and Android devices, has today reported that they’ve just closed a Series D financing round of $200 million, backed by some large, large corporations including Citi Ventures, Rizvi Traverse Management and of course Starbucks – which infamously invested an additional $25 million a few weeks back in a deal that brings Square’s debit and credit card processing to all of Starbucks’s locations.

This marks tremendous growth for Square – as pointed out by TheNextWeb’s Matt Brian, in a single year Square has gone from processing $1 billion annually with 150 employees to processing $8 billion annually with over 400 employees. Square was launched May of 2010 by Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter.
