Tumblr should use The Oatmeal’s famous TumblBeasts to lighten the mood during the downtime.

Popular social media/blogging service Tumblr yesterday announced their plans to finish a large reworking of their internal infrastructure this upcoming Saturday – that’s the good news. The bad news? You’ll have to deal with a few hours of life without Tumblr, as the service announced that they’ll be offline for a few hours while the upgrades are completed.

In a blog post, Tumblr writes:

We are now ready to complete the last major step in upgrading our infrastructure. Unfortunately, it has one very uncomfortable side-effect: all traffic to blogs and the Dashboard will be suspended during the operation — returning a simple “we’ll be right back” message.

Tumblr predicts that the largest period of downtime will occur around 4:00AM EST Saturday, October 6th, and will “come back online slowly over the next few hours.” Obviously the issue has been timed so as to affect the least amount of American visitors – we can only assume (and hope) that many Americans choose sleep over Tumblr, but the outage could last well into the morning for many users.
