Oh, the Webtop – the ultimate convergence between the smartphone, and an actual usable workstation. Originally shipped alongside the Motorola Atrix 4G, a decent but humble Android device for AT&T, it would be kind to say that the Webtop actually received any success what-so-ever. Now, Motorola has decided to ax the product once and for all.
The concept was a sound one – buy a laptop “dock” with the screen, keyboard, and trackpad and simply dock your Android smartphone there, turning it into a full fledged computer. So what turned such a vision of grandiose into a failure of massive proportions? Mostly, the execution turned it out to be more of a gimmick than a revolutionary new product – the resulting computer was slow and not particularly good at doing much of anything, and the package was pricey. Another major issue was compatibility – even Motorola itself seemingly ignored the product, allowing very few devices to take advantage of it.
So pour one out for our buddy the Webtop, as we hardly knew thee. Or don’t – it wasn’t really that good anyways.
