Under an hour to go

Reminder: Apple iPad Special Event taking place at 1PM Eastern

1395168_617923418244005_1426610576_nAs if you needed reminding, but here goes nothing – Apple will be beginning their October 22nd iPad Special Event in less than one hour now at 1PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific. If you’re getting an innate sense of dejavou, you’re not alone – Apple just held one of these a little over a month ago to announce the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

But if all the rumors were right – and we suspect that they were – we’ll be looking at a very iPad-centric keynote today. All signs are indicating that it’s a-go for a dramatically redesigned fifth-generation iPad, which should take design cues from last year’s iPad mini with a thin, dramatically reduced in size body. We also suspect we’ll see the announcement of Apple’s new A7X processor, which will be powering the iPad 5.

The most recent rumors all indicate that Apple will also be announcing the much anticipated second generation iPad mini with, yes, a Retina Display. It’ll have the same 2048 x 1536 resolution as the iPad 3, 4, and likely the 5, however the body and design is likely to remain relatively unchanged this year. What is up for contention is what SoC this iPad will use – there have been rumors that both the iPad mini and the iPad 5 will be gaining Touch ID, which would mean that the iPad mini would have to come equipped with a current generation A7 or A7X processor due to the SoC’s “secure enclave” – however, that would mean that the new iPad mini is skipping an entire generation, as the current iPad mini comes equipped with only an A5 processor.

Apple is likely to also talk a little bit about their notebook lineup, with the MacBook Pro line in particular looking very ready for an upgrade. We don’t expect to see anything dramatic here – a price decrease for the Retina MacBook Pros might be in order, and all models are likely to see a fairly significant upgrade to an Intel Core i7 Haswell architecture. Apple will likely also take this chance to officially announce that their new Mac Pro professional desktops are now on sale.

We’ll be here covering the event live, so be sure to check back throughout as the excitement unfolds!
