Well, the keynote has ended and we’re now free to look at the aftermath. Apple today did exactly what everybody and their mother expected them to in at least one regard – they introduced a new, 7.85″ iPad. And yep, it’s called the iPad mini.
The iPad mini comes with a 4:3 7.85″ display with a 1024 x 768 resolution, most similar to the iPad 2 (which still exists in the product line, by the way). It comes in three storage capacities – 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB – and each of those also with optional LTE for an additional $129. Pricing for the 16GB starts at $329, which is in line with expectations. It comes with an A5 processor, just like the iPhone 4S and iPod touch. It of course comes in black and white.
The iPad mini runs iOS 6 and the full set of iPad applications with absolutely no distinction. Yes, that means interface elements will be smaller on-screen than they are on the iPad – iOS apparently makes no distinction between the two devices.
The iPad mini will be open for pre-orders this Friday and will ship November 2nd.
