Google Earth receives makeover, amazing 3D content

This landscape is rendered using Google's new 3D technology.

Another goodie from today’s Google Maps event – Google has announced a totally redesigned version of Google Earth that includes not only a gorgeous new user interface for iOS and Android, but also some of the greatest looking 3D rendering we’ve seen on a product intented for consumers thus far. The future really is here.

Google says they’re using “automated technology to extract 3D from aerial images” for a “couple of major cities” at the moment, with more content coming soon. One of the coolest things about the new 3D feature is that the process used to create these spectacular images is entirely automated – nothing is touched by human hands, so to speak.

Google has yet to announce an availability date for the new Google Maps.
