Has Google already submitted Google Maps to the Apple App Store?
The drama continues – earlier this morning we wrote about the eerily poor state of Maps on iOS 6, and now word has it that Google has already submitted a true as blue Google Maps app to Apple’s App Store, and is sitting pretty waiting for approval as we speak.
The app would presumably work exactly as the old Maps application did, only would now be maintained by Google (the old iOS Google Maps app was developed by Apple, but used Google’s tech), and would not be tightly integrated into the OS. That means apps like foursquare – which heavily relies on iOS’s built in mapping capabilities – won’t be able to take advantage of Google Maps.
All of this comes from long time developer and tech enthusiast Steven Troughton-Smith, who tweeted out a simple “Yep.” reply to The Guardian’s suggestion that Google has indeed submitted such an app.
One can assume that Google is in no rush to play the hero here, as Apple’s newly revamped Maps application has been publicly lauded as being one of the worst new “features” of any iOS version to date. I can already imagine Google’s feeling like they’ll be the super hero that saves consumers from Apple’s cruel desire to punish consumers if the app is approved.
