Microsoft Surface to retail for a cool $199?

Whether you’re convinced that Windows 8 has what it takes to go head to head against the iPad and various other Android tablets in the market or not, here’s something that’s sure to pique your interest: rumor has it that Microsoft is about the reveal that the pricing for the eagerly awaited Windows RT version of their Microsoft Surface tablet will be set at only $199. If this is true, this is a huge win as it would make the Microsoft Surface one of the first compelling 9-inch tablets to be sold as such a low price. Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire are both $199 7-inch tablets, while the Apple iPad costs $399 for its cheapest configuration.

This bit of news comes from a supposed session at Microsoft’s TechReady15 conference and was originally reported by CNet, which is known to have had a pretty good track record in the past.

If this is true, I might find my bank account to have $199 fewer dollars soon. The Microsoft Surface is set to launch with Windows RT in October and with the x86/x64 Windows 8 “later this year”.
