Microsoft transitions away from Microsoft Points to real cash

For years now, Microsoft has used a Microsoft-specific “points” system to handle many digital downloads, primarily on the Zune Marketplace, XBox Marketplace, and most recently on all pre-release versions of Windows 8. That’s seemingly about to change as Microsoft has begun to accept cash on Windows 8′s Video purchases and rentals, as well as Music purchases.

It’s unknown if the new system will make its way over to the XBox, where points still reign supreme. Switching from a seemingly arbitrary “Points” system where every 80 points roughly equals $1 will remove the need for user to purchase “blocks” of points that are often inexact to what the user wants to purchase, and often just sit and go to waste.
