The Verge today reported that, despite contrary belief, Apple and Google had about a year left to go on their Google Maps contract – up until now, many had assumed that their contract had simply run out and Apple had, for whatever reason, decided not to renew it. But according to the new report, Apple had supposedly been willing to continue using Google Maps on iOS 6, however Google was unwilling to bring features such as turn-by-turn navigation to the table without a new contract.
The report notes that Google was after “more prominent branding and the ability to add features like Latitude”. Likewise, Google was equally unhappy with Apple’s renewal terms. Apple apparently decided that enough was enough and that turn-by-turn navigation was enough of a desirable feature that the time for a break with Google was now.
